Around one million plastic bottles discarded by pilgrims to Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) have been collected along the Hatton road, Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha industrial field officer A.W. Hemantha said.

He said steps would be taken to recycle the plastic bottles collected from garbage pins along the pilgrim route from Nallathanniya up to the Sri Pada Uda Maluwa.

Hemantha also said that prior to the annual pilgrimage season, Chief Incumbent Most Ven. Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Thera requested pilgrims not to haphazardly throw away plastic and other non-biodegradable items and accordingly, pilgrims have disposed of garbage in the proper manner.

He also pointed out the necessity of water supply facilities from Nallathanniya to the Sri Pada Uda Maluwa, adding that the lack of this facility was the reason that pilgrims carried bottles of water. If a proper project is launched, pilgrims would not need to bring plastic bottles of water to the sacred area.

However, according to Nuwara Eliya Additional District Secretary P.A. Sarathchandra, financial provisions have already been made for the water supply project.
