Avengers: Endgame

Epic, ambitious, emotional, awesome

‘Avengers: Endgame’ can be called the icing on the cake for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The long-awaited ‘conclusion’ to the ‘Avengers’ franchise offers fans a grand spectacle of their favourite superheroes, action, intrigue, visual delight and undiluted emotion.

Starting off their success story with 2008’s ‘Iron Man’ more than a decade ago, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has added a number of superheroes with unique characteristics to its universe. From earth’s mightiest heroes they have expanded their zones to those who rule our universe as well as celestial zones. With the ‘Avengers’ series, Marvel had brought these beings together to form a single unit which not only caters to audiences of diverse tastes but also in producing a series with action packed in diverse forms and zones.

With its 22nd film, Marvel attempts at something a few other studios has the guts to do: put an end to the story which it began with ‘Iron Man’ and this it does with panache. This also shows that their motto is for the new generation of avengers to shine, the originals will have to put out their light.

Avengers: Endgame picks up after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, which saw the Avengers divided and defeated. The grievance of our fallen heroes is due to Thanos’ victory of using the Infinity Stones to snap away half of all life in the universe. Only the original Avengers - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye - remain, along with some key allies in the forms of War Machine, Ant-Man, Rocket, Nebula and Captain Marvel. Each of the survivors deal with the circumstances in a different manner. From attempting to find an answer to the mystery for years in the likes of the Black Widow and Captain America to drowning their sorrows in forms of repression or alcohol like in the case of Thor, each avenger is unable to lay the past to rest. Not even Tony Stark with his cool attitude and his family in tack can forget the face of the young Peter Parker alias Spiderman whom he had groomed to be a part of the avengers team. So when Scott Lang aka Antman turns up out of the blue after five years, armed with an opportunity to save those who have vanished from the face of the earth, the avenges get together to defeat Thanos once and for all.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ struggled under the weight of balancing so many characters. ‘Avengers: endgame’ however overcomes this flaw as it is left to focus on the main avengers. However fans of the new generation are not disappointed because they are given an ample glimpse of their favourites added with a dose of action in the climax of the tale.

Two of the most emotional scenes come with the demise of two of the strongest avengers in the group. The first is when Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow sacrifices herself for Hawkeye to obtain the Soul Stone. Just when we were dreading the demise of another avenger, Tony Stark aka Iron Man manages to uses the stones to eliminate Thanos and his army but dies in the midst of the triumph revealing that victory is hard won but has its bittersweet outcomes as well.

The actions bring a mixed bag of emotions from its spectators. At times you will be cheering on your favourite superheroes with a series of ‘whoop’s but the next minute it will have you weeping with emotion for curtains will never raise again for one particular individual.

More than a blockbuster or a stellar multistarrer, ‘Avengers:Endgame’ can be dubbed as an eulogy to each and every one of Marvel’s Avengers. This is evident in the manner that all the cast have put their hearts and souls into the film.
