President Maithripala Sirisena said modern technology should be used for the advancement of humanity and not for its destruction.

Speaking at an event in Polonnaruwa, the President requested the public to use modern technology to propagate knowledge to create a world full of academics and intellectuals.

Under the 'Awakening Polonnaruwa' District Development Programme, the President vested several projects with the people. The projects have been funded by Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) and Mobitel, at a cost of Rs.2.5 billion.

Last Sunday, President Sirisena declared the Polonnaruwa town as the country’s first smart town.

He inaugurated a 5G communication tower at the Polonnaruwa Deepa Garden, as well as a communication tower built to rectify communication issues on the Habarana - Polonnaruwa road.

President Sirisena also opened a market complex in the Polonnaruwa town built by the Central Cultural Fund at a cost of Rs.44 million.

The building, which was used by the former Government Agent of Thamankaduwa, had been taken for this purpose and, as it cannot be demolished due to it being a cultural property, it had been acquired by the Central Cultural Fund and renovated while protecting its cultural identity.

The President also inspected the facilities at the trade complex, which have been built targetting both locals and foreigners. He also opened the upgraded Polonnaruwa Regional Telecom Office.

During a function at the Polonnaruwa Chandra Mandapaya, 110 schools in the district were provided with free internet facilities.

Parliamentarian Wasantha Senanayake, Polonnaruwa Mayor Chanaka Sidath Ranasinghe, public officials, the Polonnaruwa District Secretary, ministry secretaries, government officials, as well as SLT Chairman Kumarasinghe Sirisena and the SLT director board, were also present at the event.

President Sirisena later inspected the Polonnaruwa Museum, which is currently under construction.
