Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochana Abeywickrama yesterday remanded a university student till May 23 for publishing a false post on Facebook stating that the flight en route to China with President Maithripala Sirisena onboard had crashed.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochana Abeywickrama, Police informed court that the suspect was identified as Sanka Pramod Ariyawansha, a resident of Piliyandala and a student of the Sri Jayawardanepura University.
Police pleaded to remand the suspect. Meanwhile, the Counsel appearing for the suspect informed the Court that his client had shared a post which had been posted by someone else on Facebook. Counsel also requested the Magistrate to release the suspect on bail in any given condition.
However, considering all the facts, the magistrate directed the Court that this is the time that citizens have be mindful and think what they are share in public.
The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for May 23.
