CCTV cameras for all government schools: Minister

CCTV cameras are to be set up at all government schools island-wide, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

He was addressing the press at a conference held at his residence on Tuesday.

The minister said that discussions were being held to strengthen security systems at government schools. He added that the government would bear the project's expenses.

There were also no plans to cancel school term tests, Minister Kariyawasam said, adding that the G.C.E. (O.L.)and G.C.E. (A.L.) exams would be held as usual.

The minister said that postponing the aforementioned exams could pave the way for other issues. Furthermore, he said that discussions were being held on whether schoolchildren's August vacation should be cancelled to compensate for the time period that schools were closed following the Easter Sunday attacks.

"I am grateful to the school heads, teachers, and students who attended school during the past few days despite the difficulties they faced. I request all parents and teachers to continue to support the Education Ministry and the government to maintain peace and harmony in the country so that we could create a bright future for our children,” Minister Kariyawasam said.
