No foreign languages on name boards

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the relevant authorities yesterday to ensure that street name boards should not be in any foreign languages.

A statement with instructions was issued to the Home Affairs, Local Government and Provincial Council’s Minister Vajira Abeywardene to ensure that all street name boards are depicted in the Sinhala, Tamil and English languages only.

According to Minister Abeywardene’s Press Secretary,the circular will be sent out today to all Local Government offices regarding this matter. It states that besides the existing languages, no other language can be used on street name boards.

According to reports, there have been name boards in some areas in the Sinhala and Chinese languages.A similar issue was addressed last year where some China-Sri Lanka joint projects had signboards in the Chinese, English and Sinhala languages and not in Tamil.
