MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera yesterday commenced a fast-unto death protest in front of Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy demanding the removal of Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, Eastern Governor M.L.A.M. Hizbullah and Western Province Governor Azath Salley from their posts.

The Thera also asked to appoint an Independent Commission to investigate into the activities of Kurunegala Hospital’s Dr. Shafi Sahabdeen and to pay compensation to mothers who were said to have been sterilized.

Ven. Rathana Thera commenced the fast at the Mahamaluwa after worshipping the Sri Dalada Maligawa accompanied by several other Buddhist monks. The Thera had written to President Maithripala Sirisena requesting him to take stern action against the Islamic extremists.

The Thera however stressed that “Islamic terrorism” could only be defeated through non-violence.

He observed that instability will reign in the country if the ordinary people try to take the law into their hands. “If we try to use muscle power stating that we are the majority and attack business places, it will pave the way for foreign military intervention. That will lead to bloodshed in the country,” the Thera said.
