PM, Opposition Leader discuss economic recovery, relief for people

An Opposition delegation led by Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapaksa met with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees yesterday to discuss on economic recovery and relief for the people affected by the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Non-Cabinet Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva, Treasury Secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga, Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, Finance Ministry Advisor Mano Tittawella, and Treasury officials were also present.

Opposition Parliamentarians Dinesh Gunawardena, Susil Premajayantha, Bandula Gunawardena, Udaya Gammanpila, and Gamini Lokuge accompanied the Opposition Leader. Following the discussions, the Opposition Leader and the Finance Minister told media the talks were successful.

They stressed that the talks focused only on economic recovery and relief for the people by the recent terror attacks and not on politics.

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa claimed that the discussions he held with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to analyse the economic situation in the country following the Easter Sunday terror attacks and the relief granted to the affected economic sectors was highly successful.

The Opposition Leader said no political issues were discussed during this meeting.

The Opposition Leader was speaking to the media after the conclusion of the talks held at Temple Trees yesterday. Mahinda Rajapaksa said apart from the economic relief granted to the affected sectors, they also questioned about the relief granted to families of the bomb victims as well as the injured and received a briefing on such measures already taken.

The Opposition Leader who said that Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thera or political issues did not figure at their meeting, quipped that politically they were on opposing camps. Meanwhile, Non Cabinet Minister of Economic Reforms and Public distribution Dr.Harsha de Silva commenting on the talks said the Government and Opposition meeting to discuss vital national issues and needs is a healthy democratic feature which gave him great personal satisfaction. He said Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa queried about relief measures granted to small and medium scale industries and business ventures and the Central Bank Governor and the Finance Ministry Secretary explained in detail the relief packages granted to them. Dr. Harsha de Silva said working capital loans up to Rs.250 million would be granted to people engaged in the tourism sector. He said permits would be granted for metal quarries in due course as the process would take a little time. He said the financial heads of all banks are required to provide a weekly report to the Central Bank about the working of the relief package.
