Mahanayake’s stance on Muslim Ministers shattered hopes of opportunists - MP

Kurunegala District UNP MP Thushara Indunil said the statement of the Mahanayakes urging Muslim Ministers who resigned to resume duties has shattered the hopes of those who tried to arouse communal tension.

Addressing a media briefing held in Temple Trees yesterday, the MP said the collective message of the Prelates was important to build unity and harmony among all communities and avoid altercations.

“Attempts of several groups to destabilise the country by orchestrating communal violence after the Easter Sunday attacks became unsuccessful with this announcement of the Maha Sangha,” the MP said.

The Rajapaksa clan was trying to create unrest in the country for their petty political needs at a time when law enforcement authorities are working hard to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks, he said.

He said Ven. Athuraliye Rathana thera’s fast and subsequent actions were all part of a political drama staged by certain people who are seeking to gain political mileage out of this incident. He said it is clear that Rathana Thera’s protest in Kandy Temple was a political drama to help Bathiudeen from facing the no-confidence motion.

He said that the Ven. Mahanayake Theras have stressed that there should not be hatred or animosity towards the Muslims living in harmony with other communities and all have to understand this situation. We must respect the Maha Sangha’s statement which is also the stance of the UNP,” he added.

He said that people have been given an opportunity to lodge complaints against Rishad Bathiudeen at two committees set up in Police Headquarters and Parliament. If anyone has charges against him, they can submit them with evidence without levelling false allegations against the government.

He said former DIG Nalaka de Silva has told the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks that investigations into NTJ leader Zaharan Hashim was halted due to his arrest. The NTJ was strengthened afterwards creating a foundation for extremism and terrorism. We would have prevented these incidents if the authorities had taken precautions earlier without slinging mud at the UNP using Namal Kumara,” he said.
