Urban Development, Water Supply and Higher Education Ministry Secretary M. M. P. K. Mayadunne said the government has allocated Rs. 15 billion with the Budget 2019 to enhance higher education.
He was speaking after laying the foundation stone to the Faculty of Medical and Healthcare Science of the Eastern University in Pillaiyarady, Batticaloa yesterday.
The function was presided over by Eastern University Vice Chancellor Dr. F. C. Ragal.
The Secretary said Rs. 7,000 million will be spent on the construction of the faculty. It will comprise a lecture hall, hostels, administrative block, playground and residences for the lecturers, he said.
The Higher Education Ministry funds the project and the faculty will be completed in two years.
Officials from the Higher Education Ministry, Lecturers from the Eastern University, Undergrads and employees of the Eastern University participated.
