Deer poachers flee, leaving behind phone

A group of poachers carrying the carcasses of a herd of five deer which they had killed inside the Lunugamvehera National Park, fled, leaving the carcasses behind, when a team of Wildlife officers on beat gave chase in order to arrest them, on Wednesday.

A mobile phone belonging to one of the men which had fallen during their escape was taken into custody by the officers, along with the carcasses.

Park keeper Chinthaka Abeyratne said they would make use of the data in the mobile phones to track down the culprits.

The prevailing drought in the area is drawing park animals in search of water for drinking to rivulets and waterholes in the park, making them easy prey to poachers.
