Incessant rains in Hambantota affect 1,524

Heavy rains have been lashing Hambantota for last three days affecting 1,524 persons in 413 families.

Tissamaharamaya, Lunugamwehara, and Hambantota have been affected the most in the rains and the affected people have been provided with relief, Hambantota Acting District Secretary C.H. Suneth Lochana said.

Thirty five persons of seven families in Nadigamvila of the Tissamaharama Divisional Secretariat, 135 persons of 30 families in Julpallama, 150 of 40 families in Andaragasyaya, 46 persons of 46 families in Vijithapura, and 300 of 60 families in Masenpura have been severely affected in the rains. Furthermore, 485 of 100 families in Konevalena, 320 of 120 families in Magama, 100 of 25 families in Hambantota, eight of two families in Rambukwella, five of one family in Ranwarnawa, four of one family in Weheragala and four of one family in Agunakolawewa have been affected.

Tissamaharama Divisional Secretariat Office, Hambantota Disaster Management Centre and Tissamaharamaya Pradesheeya Sabha are providing the affected with cooked meals and other relief.

The District Secretary said that all sluice gates of the Lunugamwehara Reservoir have been opened resulting in raising the water level of the Kiridioya. Yodakandiyawewa has overflowed and sluice gates of Attikka tank have been also opened, he said.
