A Molecular Biology Laboratory specially setup at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) by the Health Ministry to perform PCR Tests for arriving passengers was handed over to the BIA authorities yesterday.
The Health Ministry said samples for PCR Tests obtained at the BIA from all arriving passengers were done in laboratories in other locations and reports issued. The process took a long time.
Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said that the new laboratory was set up to speed up the process on the direction of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The Health Ministry provided medical equipment worth Rs. 50 million for this new laboratory which can perform 500 PCR Tests per day. Testing will begin from Monday (13). The capacity of this new laboratory will be increased up to 1,000 PCR Tests per day soon. A PCR Test done from outside costs Rs. 6500.
