Another police officer was arrested on Monday night for allegedly involving in former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Shani Abeysekara’s forging of evidence pertaining to a firearms case.
The suspect was attached to the Embilipitiya Police. After producing before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court yesterday, he was remanded till August 7.
Police said the suspect arrived at the CID on Monday night to give a statement and was arrested thereafter.
Shani Abeysekara was arrested on July 31 over the same incident and remanded until August 7 by the Gampaha Magistrate.
Eight suspects including former Police DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his wife, and son were arrested in 2013 over the murder of businessman Mohamed Siyam. Probes were also carried out into alleged illegal possession of weapons by Gunawardena and a stash of weapons purportedly owned by Gunawardena was recovered from a house in Kalagedihena in Gampaha. Two police officers, the owner of the house and his wife later altered their testimonies saying that the weapons haul was hidden by the former CID director himself.
