Indictment against Kurunegala Mayor, three others taken up

The indictment against the Kurunegala Mayor and three others came up before Kurunegala High Court Judge Mapa Bandara. President’s Counsel Kalinga Indrathissa who appeared on behalf of the defense told Court that the former Justice Minister had allegedly influenced the first complainent not to appear in court.

In this case, Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa Witharana along with his father Sunil Witharaa, H.P. Nihal Justin and Sunil Tharanga were charged with the alleged abduction of a person along with seizure of a motor cycle worth of Rs.80,000 on September 7, 2007 at Doratiyawa, Hewapola in the Kurunegala Police area.

The judge recorded the first witness Hathurusingha’s evidence and ordered the other witnesses to appear in court on November 6, 2020.

A group of lawyers comprising president’s counsel Kalinga Indrathissa, Attorney Santha Premachandra and Nimantha Jayawikrama appeared for the defence.
