Former CID director Shani Abeysekara further remanded

The Gampaha Magistrate’s Court yesterday further remanded former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) SSP Shani Abeysekara and two others who were arrested for allegedly fabricating evidence in a case, until October 2.

Eight suspects including former Police DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his wife, and son were arrested, after they were identified as suspects in the murder of businessman Mohamed Siyam in 2013.

Later, investigations were held into Gunawardena’s alleged illegal possession of weapons.

During the investigations, the CID had presented submissions to Court that a consignment of weapons owned by Gunawardena was recovered from a house in Kalagedihena, Gampaha.

The house owner and his wife were arrested this year, under the orders of the Gampaha Magistrate.

However, two police officers, the house owner and his wife, who gave evidence on the recovered weapons recently, said the weapons were hidden at the location by the former CID director himself.

On these new statements, the CCD launched an investigation into the incident under the directives of the IGP and arrested Abeysekara on July 31.

One of the two police officers were later taken into custody on August 4, identified as Sub-Inspector Rohana Mendis, attached to the Embilipitiya Police Station and resident of Kithulanpitiya, Oluwitake.
