Rural Roads and Other Infrastructure State Minister Nimal Lanza said the Government has embarked on massive infrastructure development drive which includes developing 100,000 kilometres of roads belonging to the Provincial Councils and selected major roads belonging to the Local Government Institutions.

He added that the Government has targeted to develop 100,000 kilometres of the road network within the next four years. “The development of 100,000 kilometres of road is a big project. It should be completed in the next four years. The project is a promise given to the people by the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Prior to 2005, only 200 kilometres of roads were carpeted in a year. But, we have been able to carpet 4000 kilometres of roads after the ending of the terrorist war. Now, we have a target of carperting 100,000 kilometres of road network within the next four years. In order to achieve this target, the political authority and the relevant officials including contractors have a major responsibility to work with a greater commitment.
