PCoI on Easter Sunday attacks:

'No one could dispute certain decisions by former President'

After certain decisions by former President Maithripala Sirisena at the National Security Council (NSC) meetings, no one including former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe could dispute or make any suggestions regarding those decisions, alleged former IGP Pujith Jayasundara testifying before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) in to the Easter Sunday attacks.

Testifying before the Commission, Jayasundara pointed out that all the officers who participated at the National Security Council meetings, thought it was not good to criticise the decisions taken by the former President.

The Commissioners questioned as to why former IGP Jayasundara did not understand about Zaharan Hashim and his followers when he got to know that extremism had been spreading since 2017.

In reply, Pujith Jayasundara stated that he was well aware about the situation but the political situation at that time, the priorities of state policy and the restrictions imposed was a barrier in order to take action against extremism.

"The State Intelligence Service was responsible for investigating these matters. The State Intelligence Service should have informed this to the relevant Minister,” Jayasundara added. He added that the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) had conducted confidential inquiries regarding Islamic extremism on an order given by him.
