Three years’ jail term for murder

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Mahesh Weeraman sentenced an accused in a murder case to three years’ imprisonment and ordered him to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to the wife of the deceased concluding the Meemernapalana Murder case on September 30.

The accused, Hewage Piyadasa of Memanapalana, pleaded guilty to a charge of committting homicide not amounting to murder. The accused was indicted by the Attorney General for committing the murder of Rajah Haputantitir of Meemanapalana by stabbing him on March 14, 2017

Counsel Sumedha V. Perera appearing for the accused told court that when the incident occurred, the accused and the deceased were involved in an argument under the influence of liquor and the accused is prepared to tender a plea for committing a homicide not amounting to a murder.
