Navy holds 43 for illegal fishing

The Navy apprehended 43 persons along with dinghies and fishing gear for illegal fishing in special operations in the Eastern, Northern and North Central Naval Commands the week,

The Eastern Naval Command nabbed 32 persons with six dinghies, over 500kg of fish and fishing gear, while the suspects were fishing with banned nets.

The special operations were conducted in the sea areas off Pulmoddai, Norway Island and Salpeyaru, Trincomalee and Kotuwamada in the Batticaloa lagoon.

The Northern Naval Command in the sea area north of Chundikulam apprehended six persons for illegal diving to harvest sea cucumber. Two dinghies, 54 sea cucumbers and several sets of diving gear were seized.

The North Central Naval Command in Wankaleipadu held two more suspects with 11 sea cucumbers and seized a dinghy they used. In two more operations in Erukkulampiddi assisted by the Police STF in Mannar, the North Central Naval Command arrested a person with 247 conch shells below 70mm perimeter and over 625kg of sea cucumber, and two more suspects with four banned nets from a house in the area.

The suspects are residents of Thiriyaya, Thoppur, Kinniya Muthur, Trincomalee, Erakkandi, Nilaveli, Mannar, Vankalai, Pesalai and Thalawila aged 18-46.

The accused along with the dinghies and fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Directors of Fisheries in Trincomalee, Mannar and Batticaloa and the Fisheries Inspectors of Pulmoddai, Trincomalee, Mannar and Point Pedro, the Navy Media Unit said.
