Soba Ama commences today

Soba Ama National Tree Planting Programme will be launched in accordance with the environment policy outlined in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s election manifesto. Two million saplings will be planted under the programme.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that the inaugural ceremony of the programme will be held today at the Ruwanweliseya premises.

He was addressing a media conference yesterday at the Government Information Department,

The programme will be implemented with the participation of schoolchildren, Dhamma schoolchildren and farmers.

Several other programmes will be also set up in the near future in this regard.

He said that a fake news campaign that alleges an environmental destruction is taking place in the country highlighting forest reserves are being burnt down and trees in natural forests are being cut down.

Certain groups in this way are attempting to convince the public that an unprecedented environmental destruction is taking place under the Government and any legal action will not be taken against the culprits.

“I have already invited the Opposition Leader who made such allegations several times for an open discussion,” he said.

Minister Amaraweera said that the Government has already taken legal action against the culprits of environmental destruction.

“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed authorities not to let anybody to harm the environment and to take strict legal action against any person causing environmental harm without considering their political view or social status.” the Minister said.
