Elephant attack claims two

Two residents of the Galgamuwa area of the Kurunegala District were killed by a wild elephant on the night of September 28.

The deceased were identified as W.M. Nimal Herath Wanninayake (41) and E.M. Piyadasa (65), residents of Nithalawa village in the Galgamuwa Police area. They had been attacked by the elephant while they were returning home after casual work. They were rushed to the Galgamuwa government hospital where they died.

Galgamuwa Wildlife officers told the Daily News yesterday that 73 houses in the Galgamuwa electorate were demolished by wild elephants this year. Due to the human–elephant conflict, about seven wild elephants were killed during this year and three persons were killed by wild elephants this year.
