Rural bridges construction project begins

The inaugural ceremony of the first phase of the construction of rural bridges to replace those hanging, wooden plank and small bridges was held yesterday in the Ratnapura District under the patronage of Rural Roads and Other Infrastructure State Minister Nimal Lanza.

The construction work of the Kalawana Hapugoda Bridge in the Ratnapura District was commenced under the supervision of the Road Development Authority (RDA) with the contribution of the Sri Lanka Public Engineering Front. The construction of the Hapugoda Bridge was commenced at the request of Small Plantation, Crops Development and related export promotion State Minister, Janaka Wakkumbura.

The first phase of the project is implemented in the Ratnapura, Badulla, Kegalle and Kurunegala Districts.

This programme is set up in line with the “Vision of Prosperity” by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to uplift the rural economy, promote the tourism industry and facilitate the daily activities of the people.

It is implemented on the instructions of the Chief of the Presidential Task Force on Economics Revival Basil Rajapaksa.

The construction of bridges at Kiriella Deheragoda, Kuruwita Thalawitiya, Eheliyagoda Iddamalgoda, Bopath Ella and Erathnagoda in the Ratnapura District was also commenced.

State Minister Nimal Lanza said that proposals have been called from 25 districts to implement the bridge project and the Ministry has received over 5,000 small bridge proposals. He stated that the Government will meet the requirements of these bridges within the next four years by prioritising the proposals received. Representatives of the Regional Political Authority, the Engineers Association of the Sri Lanka People’s Front, Road Development Authority officials and villagers were present.
