Art and Sculpture Exhibition

An Art and Sculpture exhibition of German Artist Akeem Kalugalla, will open for the public at the Gallery FourLife, No 26, Boteju Road, Colombo 5 today at 6.00 pm. The exhibition will be held until October 4.

Born and educated in Germany, Akeem started his art career at age 14 by being the youngest ever student of Prof. Joseph Beuys (The Social Sculpture), the most influential member of the European happening art and conceptual art movements. Skeptical of the anti-figurative art market at the time, he turned to writing and became a bestselling author from age 19. After writing well over 30 books, Akeem started to carve black granite (Kalugall) in an abandoned quarry in Sri Lanka in the mid 2000s. Local neighbours called him ‘Mister Kalugalla’ – a name Akeem liked so much that he uses it since.
