Four arrested over Rs.30 mn Katana robbery

Police had arrested four persons on Thursday (01) in connection with the robbery of a businessman’s house in Akkara Panaha in Katana recently. The robber gang had entered the house of the businessman and threatened the occupants with weapons and stolen over Rs. 30 million last Wednesday (30).

The police had recovered a portion of the stolen cash, jewellery and the car in which the robbers had arrived and a motorcycle.

Police said that seven suspects were involved in the robbery and one of the four arrested suspects is an Army deserter.

The mastermind of this robbery and two others are still at large and the Police have deployed two teams to arrest them. In addition, technical teams have also been deployed to analyze the techniques used by the robbers, the weapons used, and others involved or assisted in the robbery.

Police had also recovered Rs.7,235,380 and a part of the stolen jewellery, said Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne, addressing a media briefing yesterday.

He said that the Police had come to know about the whereabouts of the mastermind of this robbery and he would be arrested soon. The gang of thieves had stolen Rs.19 million in cash and jewellery from the businessman.

The four suspects who have been arrested are residents of Gampaha, Eppawala, Seeduwa and Nikaweratiya areas. The motorcar used for the robbery was found at the residence of the suspect in Gampaha. The Army deserter is a resident of Seeduwa but he was arrested in the Mawathagama area where he was hiding. The motorbike was recovered from the residence of the suspect from Eppawala.

The investigations are being carried out on the directives of Colombo Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon, under the leadership of the Negombo SSP Saman Sigera by a team of Police officers of the Katana Police led by OIC Chief Inspector Dilan Rajapaksa.

At the time of the robbery, the businessman and his family members were in the house and the robber gang had threatened them with pistols and stolen the valuables. According to Police, the robber gang had arrived in a small blue car and two motorbikes.
