Weheragala Reservoir, a boon to farmers

The farming community in Hambantota district paid a tribute to the present Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa for having implemented the Weheragala Reservoir project in 2005 when he was the Irrigation and Water Management Minister.

They said that this project was one of the largest reservoir development projects that provided sustainable solutions to the problem of scarcity of drinking water and water for agricultural activities. The project was handled solely with local technical expertise and resources. The paddy fields that were abandoned for decades in Hambantota district were cultivated during the Yala and Maha seasons utilising the water of the Weheragala Reservoir. This project fulfilled the requirements of drinking water needs of the people in Tissamaharama, Kataragama and Lunugamwehera.
