Certain unscrupulous persons have been squatting in the lands of aboriginal peoples of Kotabakiniya, Dambana, off Mahiyanganaya, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday said.

Chief of the Veddah people of Kotabakiniya told the Minister their plight and requested to resolve the issue. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera visited Morabedda, Katabakiniya and met Chief Wanniya.

The Minister was returning from Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and certain other areas where he was on a fact-finding visit.

Leader of the Veddah communities around Vakarai, Velayudan requested the Government to look at the issue. “Our people are cooperating with the Wildlife Conservation Department and the Forest Conservation Department to protect forest reserves from vandals,” he said.

“The Government could help our people by renovating a few rural reservoirs for irrigating our crop fields,” Wanniya said.

“The Government has initiated a range of projects for a better tomorrow under the guidance of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa,” he said.

Minister Amaraweera told the chief that he will resolve the issues.

The Minister said that there is plenty of scope for a broad discussion about the matters and the Government and the President will resolve the issues of the Veddah people.

A forum will be held in the near future in this regard, the Minister said.
