Abishekam Pooja on 71st Army Anniversary

Customary Hindu spiritual blessings on the forthcoming 71st Army Anniversary and the Army Day (10) were invoked on Octomber 3 at the Shri Ponnambalawaneswaram Kovil, Colombo 13 in a special ‘Abishekam’ ritual, considered as one of the most revered and recognised blessings among the Hindus.

Defence Staff Chief and Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva participated as the day’s Chief Guest at the invitation of the Army Hindu Association chaired by Brigadier Himal Guruge. The ceremony assumed greater significance as several priests commenced the Pooja amid different decorations.

The ‘Abishekam’ Pooja organised by the Sri Lanka Army Hindu Association invoked blessings on the Army Flag, bestowed blessings on the Army and prayed for its well-being and longevity. A 10 member team of Hindu priests led by the Chief Kurukkal, Sivashri Suresh Kurukkal performed the ‘Pooja’ and added significance and dignity to the commemoration of the forthcoming 71st Army Anniversary Day.

A special Islamic prayer was also held to bless SL Army in line with the 71st Anniversary of Sri Lanka Army.

Multi religious activities conducted and Islamic religious rituals took place at the Kollupitiya Jummah Mosque on October 3 with the Defence Staff Chief and Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva.

A traditional Islamic ‘Bayan’ was conducted by the Imam Moulavi blessing the Army flag with ‘Qirath’ and ‘Dua’ prayers. A series of religious and social events have been organised in parallel to the 71st Anniversary and the Army Day on October 10.
