‘SLFP supports 20A’

Kurunegala SLFP Parliamentarian and the present SLFP General Secretary and State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara told the Daily News yesterday in Kurunegala that the SLFP has decided to support the government to make the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution a reality.

State Minister Jayasekara said that the SLFP has forwarded its own views to the President and the Prime Minister in this regard. The SLFP had appointed a 10-member committee headed by SLFP senior Deputy Chairman Nimal Siripala de Silva to review the draft 20th Amendment.

“However, the SLFP is more interested in introducing a new Constitution than in the 20th Amendment. We have already informed our stance to the leaders of the SLPP and we are not willing to share our views with the media just now as it is too early to do so,” the State Minister said.

Meanwhile, Kurunegala District SLPP Parliamentarian and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando told the Daily News yesterday in Kurunegala that there will not be any problem for the present government to secure a two-thirds majority to pass the 20th Amendment to the Constitution as 20 more Opposition MPs too have expressed their willingness to support this Amendment as many provisions of the 19th Amendment had ruined the country.
