National Surfing C’ship concludes

The National Surfing Championship 2020 was concluded at Arugam Bay Beach, amidst a large gathering of both local and foreign expatriates. Mobitel sponsored the National Surf Championship Series 2020 as the Official Telecommunication Partner.

The championship was jointly organized by the Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Tourism.

Over 25 foreign competitors took part in the open event along with top sixteen surfers from the National Championship. A total of 50 locals competed in the National Championship.

Last year’s local champion surfer from Weligama SC, D.A. Lakshitha Madushan dominated as he carried away the National Surfing Championship while the men’s’ singles was won by W. I. Asanka Sanjeeva.

.. There were five foreign competitors in the women’s surfing event and Nikita Roobb of South Africa was the winner of, followed by Estonia’s Kroot coming in second and Jayamanne ending up third.

One of the organisers of the event LankaSportsrizen Chairman, Tilak Weerasinghe said that events of these nature not only keeps the sports alive but also gives the local tourism sector a huge boost as the event helped to increase room occupancy in the area during the time. “It also gave a boost to the destinations once again as a global surfing venue.
