Road-cleaning project launched in Pottuvil

A road-cleaning project was launched under the instructions of East Security Forces Commander Major General Chinthaka Gamage at the Pottuvil Divisional Secretariat, last Sunday. The project is being carried out under the theme ‘Keep Roads Clean and Make the City Beautiful’.

The event was organised by Commanding Officer (Sengamam) Lt. Colonel A.M.M.P. Kuma Medegedera, with the support of Pottuvil Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman M.S. Waseeth, Arugam Bay Tourists Association M.H.A. Raheem, and former YMMA President N.M. Naphiel.

The project is organised in three different groups: one group worked from Pottuvil to Panama, while the other two groups cleared roads leading to Urani and Sengamam.

Volunteers from the Pradeshiya Sabha, Chamber of Tourism Industry of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay Tourism Association, social welfare associations, women development organisations, and sports clubs, along with Army personnel, Grama Niladhari officers, and Samurdhi Officers, took part in the cleaning activities by collecting waste such as plastic bottles, polythene bags, and other garbage dumped along roadsides.

Stagnant water in drains were also cleaned under the project. Tractors and heavy vehicles belonging to Pradeshya Sabhas were deployed to collect wastes at dumpsites.

Addressing the volunteers just before the commencement of the project, Lt. Colonel Kuma Medegedera stressed the importance of keeping roads and the environment clean, so as to make the city clean. “This paves the way for our area to be free of dengue and other diseases,” he said. He advised everyone to take greater care in keeping roads and home gardens clean in order to prevent the spread of diseases such as dengue.
