‘No turmeric shortage here by 2022’

“Farmers cultivate the total requirement of turmeric now. The annual requirement is around 7,000 metric tonnes,” Department of Agricultural Exports Director General A.P.Heenkenda yesterday said to the Daily News in Kurunegala.

“Of that, 5,000 metric tonnes are imported. About 1,500 hectares have been cultivated with turmeric. The harvest will be reaped in January, 2021. About 22,500 metric tonnes of raw turmeric can be reaped then and 3,800 metric tonnes of dried turmeric can be produced from the harvest,” he said.

“About 4,000 metric tonnes of raw turmeric will be used as seed turmeric. The country, therefore, will have enough turmeric by 2022,” he said.
