Pulmudai sand release to company in Dambulla suspended

Expert committee to study radioactivity

Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa has suspended the release of sand from the Pulmudai plant of Lanka Mineral Sands Limited to a company in Dambulla following revelations that it may be radioactive.

The Minister paid close attention to the revelation made by Prof. Athula Senaratne

of the Peradeniya University’s Geology Department that the sand brought from Pulmudai to Dambulla is radioactive.

Accordingly, the Minister has instructed the Ministry Secretary to immediately suspend the discharge of mineral sands from the Pulmudai plant of Lanka Mineral Sands Limited, which belongs to his Ministry, to the private company in the Dambulla area, a press communiqué issued by the minister’s media unit said. The minister had also instructed the secretary to look into the procedure followed by Lanka Mineral Sands Ltd. when releasing waste generated after refining Ilmenite to private companies An expert committee will be appointed to look into the issue of radioactive sand in Dambulla and the operations of Lanka Mineral Sands Limited on the instructions of the minister, the statement said.
