Ocean University to provide more educational opportunities - PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday instructed officials to expand vocational and educational opportunities in the fields of Fisheries, Marine and Naval Engineering at the Ocean University.

This was stated by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at a meeting held at Temple Trees regarding the physical and human resource development of the Ocean University, the Prime Minister’s Media Unit said in a statement.

He gave instructions to establish and develop Sri Lanka Ocean University in the Kalametiya area in the Hambantota District and emphasized that steps should be taken to develop the Faculty of Technology in the Mattakkuliya area where it is currently being maintained.

The Ocean University of Sri Lanka was established on a concept of Mahinda Rajapaksa when he was President.

The National Institute of Fisheries and Marine Engineering, which he started, was officially declared a University by Act No. 31 of 2014.

At the same time, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa pointed out that although he had given a plot of land in the Kalamatiana area for the construction of the Sri Lanka Ocean University during his tenure as the Fisheries Minister, the development of the Ocean University had come to a complete standstill due to attempts by previous fisheries ministers to move the Ocean University to their electorates.

Prof. Nalin Ratnayake, Vice Chancellor of Ocean University pointed out to the Prime Minister that there is a need for laboratories, lecture halls, workshops, sports halls as well as human resources to conduct degree courses and vocational training courses.

Focusing on the vocational and degree courses being conducted under limited space, the Prime Minister instructed the relevant Ministers and the authorities to take immediate steps to alleviate such difficulties.

The Prime Minister said these efforts should supplement the vision of the government aimed at supplying skilled workers and professionals in the fields of fisheries, marine engineering, marine engineering and marine science to the local and foreign markets.
