PCoI probing Easter Sunday attacks

Namal Kumara was hired and paid by then Presidential Secretariat - Pujith

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara testifying before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing the Easter Sunday attacks, yesterday said that Namal Kumara who exposed an alleged assassination attempt on former President Maithripala Sirisena and the former Defence Secretary and present President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was a person who was hired and paid by the then Presidential Secretariat.

Jayasundara said that Namal Kumara had given lectures to the Narcotics Task Force of the Presidential Secretary and he had taken money through vouchers. “I came to know this information by its Directors Dr. Samantha Kithalaarachchi,” Jaysundara added.

He said that he was ready to reveal the names of the people like Namal Kumara who created the crisis in the country with special privileges as well as those who governed with privileges and served as Presidential Advisors.

Jayasundara has claimed that Namal Kumara was involved in the Kandy incident as an informant and that he was given a reward of Rs.500,000 from the Police fund. He also requested from the Commission to look into those behind the Namal Kumara’s involvement as well as the intelligence officer who met suicide bomber Mohamed Jameel before the bomb blast at the Dehiwala Tropical Inn Hotel.

The former IGP said that he did not drink a single glass of water from the house of former President Maithripala Sirisena on New Year’s Day on April 14, 2019 when he went with his Director of Security Rohan Silva to offering betel leaves and taking blessings from the former President Sirisena.

We left the house about 10 minutes after offering betel leaves and his wife refused to go there, He said.

The commission asked,”Are you saying that the former President is lying?”

Responding to a query made by the commission he said that “former President has a habit of lying. He has also lied to me.

“On Police New Year Celebrations’s Day, I testified before the Commission that I boarded the plane while the former President left the country. When the President left the country I participated on duty. I am the IGP of the Country. He was the first citizen of the country. As a subordinate I participated on that occasion. Just saluted for him but did not get on the plane. I know his reaction to me and the way he looks at me. He always looked at me with apprehension as if he was an enemy. ‘Why?’ that’s the way he asked from me.”

He added that he rarely met the former President and he met him through the Secretary to the President or Secretary of Defense during his official duties.

“The stress I suffered was immense. This is a very unusual situation. I do not know if there was such a political culture. I always had the confidence that my hands were clean and I had done nothing wrong. Not everyone can be an IGP. Many people lost hope at the last minute. The situation is the same. It is a position that nature gives to a fair balance. I had the physical and mental strength to endure all of this.” he said.

The former IGP also told the Commission that he would reveal to the commission everything that he endured alone without telling anyone exactly how these things happened.
