Fourteen out of 20 high rise buildings in Kandy city at risk - Report

Fourteen out of 20 high rise buildings in the heart of Kandy city are at risk of collapsing, an Expert Committee appointed by the Central Province Governor Lalith U.Gamage said in its report yesterday .

This Committee headed by Provincial Engineering Services Department Deputy Director W.M.A. Wickremasinghe, was appointed by the Governor to look into the condition of the high rise buildings that are located in densely populated areas in the city. The Committee Report said that twenty buildings were investigated by them and 14 of them were found to be at risk. These 14 buildings have also been forked into two categories, namely risk and high risk buildings.

Twenty buildings have been identified by the Committee and investigations were conducted on different aspects

The Committee presented its report to the Central Province Governor yesterday. Committee member and Dean of the Engineering Faculty of the Peradeniya University Prof.S.B.S.Abeykoon said that the Committee Report also contained the recommendations to be implemented with regard to these buildings.
