Country needs new Constitution - Ramanna and Amarapura Maha Nikayas

The Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya and Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya in a joint statement yesterday said that the Government should strive to introduce a new Constitution that will uphold democracy and rule of law without amending the existing Constitution again.

The two Chapters in a joint statement issued under the hands of Maha Lekakadhikari of Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya Most Ven Pallekande Rathanasara Thera and the Maha Lekakadhikari of Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya Ven Aththangane Sasana Rathana Thera said that introducing the 20th Amendment to the Constitution is not the need of hour.

“The country does not need the 20th Amendment to the Constitution. A new Constitution that can uplift the country economically as well as politically should be formulated,” the statement said

The statement added a public dialogue should be built up for the formulation of a new Constitution upholding democracy and the rule of law.

“The check and balance between the executive, judiciary and legislature should be maintained . The JRJ Government in 1978 acquired enormous power to the executive disregarding the basic principles of democracy, the statement said.

“The 20th Amendment to the Constitution will pose a great challenge to democracy,” the statement said.
