CSE reports second highest turnover of Rs. 5.5 bn for 2020

YTD of Rs. 1.61 bn, highest since 2011

The Colombo Stock Exchange reported the second highest turnover for the year 2020 of Rs. 5.5 billion yesterday.

The year-to-date daily average turnover, which is an indication of investor participation in the market, currently stands at Rs. 1.61 Billion – the highest figure recorded since 2011.

Overall market activity in terms of the average number of trades carried out during a trading day has also increased significantly by 134% when compared to the average figure recorded in 2019.

The All Share price index also gained 1.5%, closing at 5,890.13 points and the S&P SL20 Index similarly moved upward with the index gaining 1.87% to close at 2,346.83 points.

The overall value of the stock market, which is represented by the Market Capitalization, has improved, adding Rs. 514 billion over the past five- month period.

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) remained buoyant with investors taking note of the opportunity currently prevalent in the market. The CSE has continued to record high turnover volumes and an increase in overall trading activity. The market has remained resilient amidst the COVID-19 scare and continues to be fueled by the retail and high-net worth investors.

Local investors have contributed to approx. 80% of the total market turnover since the market reopened for trading on May 11, 2020 following the extended closure which is significantly higher when compared to approx. 36% recorded pre-closure.
