Travel ban on Rishad

Colombo Fort Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage yesterday issued a travel ban on Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen and Director of the Project for Resetting Internally Displaced Persons Samsudeen Mohommed Yazen.

The Attorney General had earlier instructed the Acting Inspector General of Police to arrest Ceylon Makkal Congress Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen and two others according to the law.

The MP Rishad Bathiudeen is to be charged with Criminal misappropriation of public funds and the violation of election laws.

Meanwhile, Bathiudeen is being charged with using 222 buses belonging to the Sri Lanka Transport Board to transport internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Puttalam to polling booths set up in Sellathurai during the 2019 Presidential election.

He is also being charged with misappropriating state funds amounting to Rs.9.5 million flouting provisions contained in the offenses against public property act. The Fort Magistrate had earlier rejected to issue a warrant on them. The Magistrate had observed that it was not necessary to obtain a warrant from a court in order to arrest MP Rishad Bathiudeen and others based on the nature of the charges filed against them.
