‘Approval for 20A to Constitution expected before Budget’

Batik, Handloom Fabrics and Local Apparel Products State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara told the Daily News yesterday in Kurunegala that the Government hopes to obtain the approval of Parliament for the 20th amendment to the Constitution before the National Budget for 2021 is presented.

“The Budget for the next year is to be presented to Parliament on November 17. When the Budget is presented, debates will be continued for several days in Parliament. Therefore, before presenting the Budget, the debate on the 20th Amendment has to be arranged. The decision of the Supreme Court over the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution will be tabled before the Parliament by the Speaker on October 20,” the State Minister said.

“The report which includes proposals for the 20th Amendment prepared by the 10-member committee of the SLFP has already been handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. A number of new amendments would most probably be added to it when it is presented to Parliament as per the latest declarations of the Attorney General on the proposed Amendment and the judgement of the Supreme Court,” he said.
