Navy apprehends 28 persons for illegal fishing

The Navy apprehended 28 persons and seized their fishing gear for illegal fishing from September 30 to October 14 in the North Central, Eastern, Northern and Western Naval Commands.

The North Central Naval Command held seven persons along with two dinghies, two fishing nets and several other fishing gear in two operations in the seas off Thewampiddi and Achchanakulam. Another person was nabbed for transferring over 18kg of sea cucumber without licence in Urumalai, Talaimannar.

The Eastern Naval Command apprehended 12 persons and seized three dinghies and 10 fishing nets in seas off Salpeyaru and Trincomalee and Kotuwamada in Batticaloa.

The Northern Naval Command also held four persons, while they were harvesting sea cucumber in the seas off the Guru Nagar Jetty in Mandaitivu. A dinghy, fishing accessories and 100 sea cucumbers were seized. Two more persons together with a canoe and a banned fishing net were caught in seas off Ceynor Jetty, Karainagar.

The Western Naval Command apprehended two persons, while they were catching fish in the Diyawanna Lake with banned fishing net. A boat, 12kg of illegally caught fish and several other fishing gear were seized.

The suspects were identified as residents of Silawathura, Mulankavil, Mannar, Erakkandi, Nilaveli, Kinniya and Guru Nagar, Kayts and Rajagiriya. They are in age groups of 19 to 57.

The accused together with dinghies, nets and fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Directors of Fisheries in Mannar, Trincomalee and Batticaloa and the Fisheries Inspector of Kuchchaveli, Guru Nagar and Kayts and National Aquaculture Development Authority, Battaramulla.
