Matara MC Mayor appreciates parents, who involve children in Scouting

The Mayor of the Matara Municipal Council, Ranjith Yasarathna appreciated the parents, who involve their students in Scouting seeking a prosperous future amidst occupied lifestyles.

The Mayor said this at a police lifeguards workshop conducted for scouts simultaneously to commemorate the Children’s Day.

The event was organized by the Matara Scout Association and the Open Scout Unit collaborating with the Matara Polhena Lifeguard Unit.

The Mayor also recalled his childhood elaborating that students back then had enough time to engage in extracurricular activities when compared to the present-day students. And also pointed out that students have less time to spend with their parents which is a major issue.

He further said that the Scouting Movement teaches youngsters to earn their living from the beginning and that they take the first steps to earn money by working from house to house during the work week.

Mayor also presented medals to the students of the Open Scout Unit and Major Samitha Siriwardena of the Abhimansala Army Rehabilitation Centre, Kamburupitiya was also present as a special guest at the event.

The Matara Polhena Police Life Saving Unit successfully conducted a lifesaving workshop for over 60 scouts and at the end of the workshop a valuable certificate was also issued.

This programme was conducted on behalf of the Matara District Scout Headquarters by the District Commissioner Indika Prasanna and the Assistant District Commissioner Manoj Sanjaya under the leadership of the District Association and the officers of the Matara Police Life Saving Unit.
