Over 1,200 curfew violators arrested

177 vehicles taken into custody:

Over 1, 230 persons have been arrested and 177 vehicles taken into police custody for violating the quarantine curfew and quarantine rules and regulations up to yesterday (29).

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana stated that 73 have been arrested and three vehicles have been taken into police custody during the last 24 hours.

The DIG further said that special police teams have been deployed in uniforms and mufti to apprehend suspects who violate quarantine curfew and quarantine rules and regulations

He said a quarantine curfew has been imposed in 68 police areas in Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara and Kuliyapitiya police divisions. In addition to that with the implementation of quarantine curfew in the Western Province in effect from yesterday (29) midnight, quarantine curfew was imposed for 117 police areas in the country.

DIG Ajith Rohana also added that quarantine rules and regulations are not applicable to GCE Advanced Level exam students and the invigilating staffers.He said that they can use their admission cards or any other applicable documents as the curfew permit.

He said that roadblocks have been placed bordering the Western Province manned by police and the Special Task Force (STF) since 6 am yesterday (29) to prevent people from travelling across districts. He said those residing in the Western Province cannot leave the province without any valid reason and police officers deployed at roadblocks are informed to check details.

DIG Rohana said factories situated in the Western Province will be allowed to function adhering to the quarantine laws and instructions given by the police and health authorities. The management of the relevant factories have been advised to contact the nearest police station and health authorities for authorisation.
