The Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 Cricket Tournament received a huge boost yesterday, with former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan joining the Kandy Tuskers Franchise as an overseas player.

The inaugural edition of the 23-match LPL, with the participation of five Franchise Teams is set to begin on November 21 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota.

In fact, the Kandy Tuskers Franchise Team, owned by Indian actor, Salman Khan’s brother Sohal Khan also includes Chris Gayle (West Indies), Liam Plunkett (England) and Wahab Riaz (Pakistan) as the other overseas players.

“We are delighted to welcome Irfan Pathan as the fourth overseas player to our team and we look forward to a major contribution from him,” a top official of the Kandy Tuskers Franchise told the Daily News Sports yesterday.

Earlier, five foreign players - Andre Russell (Colombo Kings), Francois du Plessis (Colombo Kings), David Miller (Dambulla Hawks), Manvinder Bisla (Colombo Kings) and Dawid Malan (Jaffna Stallions) pulled out from the tournament due to personal commitments after being drafted into their respective teams. Pathan will also become the second Indian player to turn up in the LPL T20 Tournament along with Manpreet Gony, who has been picked by the Colombo Kings Franchise.

Pathan, who is currently commentating on the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 Tournament in the United Arab Emirates, is looking forward towards making his presence felt in the LPL.

“I am definitely looking forward to playing in the LPL this year. I had retired from T20 cricket but I can play around the world,” the 36-year-old revealed yesterday.

“Hopefully, I will be able to have fun with my game as well, which I didn’t have for the last two years,” he stressed.

“I think I can still play some quality cricket but I will start slowly and see how this goes and then I will take it forward,” he further added.

Pathan is a veteran of 177 T20s having turned up for the Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Rising Pune Supergiants and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the lucrative IPL.

Another significant fact is that Pathan, played his last T20I in Sri Lanka during the 2012 ICC World T20 Tournament against South Africa at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
