AG directs Acting IGP to probe alleged land grab

Attorney General Dappula De Livera directed the Acting IGP to commence an investigation on the Hambantota Mayor and his associates in connection with the alleged forcible acquisition of lands of Sri Lankans living abroad by political power and selling them using forged deeds.

Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said that this decision was taken by the Attorney General following a video clip containing CCTV footage which is circulating on social media that a group of people forcibly entered a land in the Nugegoda area for acquisition. According to the video, Hambantota Mayor Eraj Ravindra Fernando, Dexter Ajith Balasooriya, Sanith Sanjeewa Weeraratne and Mohomad Masahir Mohamed Nazeerdeen have been identified as suspects over the incident.

The Attorney General further said that Dexter Ajith Balasooriya prepared forged deeds for Eraj Ravindra Fernando and Eraj Ravindra uses his own private security service to forcibly enter the lands. The Attorney General instructed Acting IGP to refer the Criminal Investigations Department to conduct the inquiry and submit the progress report of the investigations to him within seven days.
