SLPP made significant gains in just four years – Prof. G. L. Peiris

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has been able to win the trust of the Sri Lankan public in a very short period, SLPP Chairman and Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said yesterday.

Prof. Peiris said the party, which marked its fourth anniversary yesterday, is the only party in the country that had won three major elections – Local Government, Presidential and General - in just four years since its inception.

“Founded in 2016 on a concept of former minister Basil Rajapaksa and based on the leadership of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the SLPP has been able to win over the masses who were fed up with the revenge politics and policies of the established political parties. The SLPP had a unique appeal to the marginalized voters who rallied round the party in droves,” Prof. Peiris told a news conference.

“The SLPP has become the true party of the ordinary masses. The Opposition thought that the Rajapaksas would never be able to come to power again after their defeat in 2015. But the policy failures, national security blunders and vengeful actions against the Rajapaksas saw to the demise of the Good Governance regime and people once again yearned for a rock-steady leadership helmed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa,” he added.

The Minster said the party was strengthening its grassroots network and was looking forward to future elections, but at the moment the Government was committing all resources to fight the Coronavirus pandemic. Both President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa were working round the clock to defeat the pandemic and ensure a healthy nation for the populace.
