Authorities urged to re-open Labunoruwa Gliricidia-based power plant

People of Labunoruwa and suburbs in the Thirappane Divisional Secretariat Division in the Anuradhapura District urge relevant authorities to revive the defunct Labunoruwa Gliricidia (Dendro) based power plant.

The country’s first Dendro power plant, Labunoruwa, had added 5,000,000 kWh to the National Grid for three months in 2012.

According to P. R. Wijewardhana, who was the Project Development Engineer at its beginning, it was planned to supply 15.5 Mw by opening another four Gliricidia based renewable power plants in the Horowpothana, Kahatagasdigiliya, Mahawilachchiya and Galenbindunuwewa DS Divisions after opening the Labunoruwa plant, which unfortunately was not realised.

He said that 100,000 Gliricidia saplings were planted in Thisappane and 1,000 farmers, too, signed sale contracts in this regard.

Wijewardhana said that it was also planned to set up an organic fertiliser processing plant using Gliricidia along with agrarian service authorities.

The Labunoruwa Human and Community Development Youth Organisation members have requested Anuradhapura District Parliamentarian and Renewable Energy Sources State Minister Duminda Dissanayake to re-open the Labunoruwa power plant under the President’s Renewable Energy Policy.
