‘Treasure hunters vandalising sacred places’

Wayamba Provincial Archaeology Assistant Commissioner L. M. Gunathilleke Bandara said that places such as cave temples, moonstones, guard stones and ponds in the province have been extensively damaged by treasure hunters from January.

He said that about 100 historical places that have been damaged were reported during the last 10 months.

“Buddha statues and sacred places have been destroyed by treasure hunters. This is a very sad state of affairs,” he said.

He said that several treasure hunters have been arrested and produced before courts.
