NPP extends full support to prevent COVID-19 pandemic

The National People’s Power (NPP) will fully support a government-steered national mechanism to control the spread of COVID-19 virus in the country, NPP leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said in Parliament yesterday.

MP Dissanayake urged the Government to take measures to prevent COVID-19 from spreading in households and among the adult community.

MP Dissanayake pointed out that the Government has taken some positive measures to control the pandemic. “However, some unwise moves have been made. There is no point in arguing who did what now. Our discussion on the pandemic in the country should not be political. It’s better if we establish a council to discuss the matter in length. A brief discussion like this won’t do. So, I would like to request the Government to give us an opportunity to extend our support to fight the pandemic,” he said.

He said that the whole nation is jeopardised by the pandemic. “Even Parliament is somewhat affected by the pandemic. Several journalists and police officers have been affected. The people who were affected are in the active community. If the virus makes its way into the fragile groups of society, such as our adult and household community, things will get serious. We cannot allow this to happen. We cannot jeopardise our adults. The Government cannot give up its grip over the pandemic. If by any chance it happens, this situation will turn into a national crisis. People did not elect us to argue with each other at the wake of a national crisis. So, we would like to request the Government to come up with a proper mechanism to fight the pandemic. We will extend our fullest support to the Government in this regard,” MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.
