Opposition’s proposals rejected in preventing COVID second wave - Sajith

The Government turned a deaf ear to proposals by the Opposition to stop a second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday said in Parliament yesterday.

“We requested the Government to give facemasks free. We made this request around January and February. It was completely rejected. Then we requested to declare an emergency situation in the country. It was also not considered. Then we requested to follow strict health regulations when dealing with foreign countries. This proposal also got the same treatment. In New Zealand, the Health Minister stepped down due to a failure in quarantine. Health authorities did not import a single ventilator. Nor PCR machines. The Government was focused only on increasing its political power. Now people who have contracted the virus do not have hospital beds,” Premadasa said.

Premadasa said that the Government is not following a comprehensive plan to eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic. He also said that the Government manipulated the pandemic for their own political agenda.

Opposition Leader Premadasa said that there is no proper political leadership to the country’s fight against the pandemic. “Those who are in the health service and the military service are fighting the pandemic sacrificing their lives. However, the public is questioning whether there is a credible political leadership that guides these services.

All SMEs have collapsed. The development is seriously affected. I would like to request the Government to give relief to the people. The Government should extend the relief given on debt and leasing payments.

I would also like to request the Government to carry out the PCR tests on randomly selected persons. Use the international aids given to fight the pandemic. We can bring down field hospitals from other countries, if the Government find it difficult to, the Opposition shall assist the Government in this regard. The Opposition will assist the Government to fight this pandemic. I think it is time that we discard our political differences and fight for a better cause,” Premadasa said.
